Action on Empty Homes is proud to be an environmental partner of 1% for the Planet.
Companies dedicated to donating 1% of yearly profits to environmental causes are able to choose Action on Empty Homes as a recipient of their donations.
We continue to campaign vigorously for sustainable approaches to housing delivery, first and foremost by advocating for the retrofit and re-use of the over 700,000 empty homes in England. Returning empty homes to use, and retrofitting them along the way, can help in a significant way to reduce the need for such high numbers of new-build homes and therefore reduce the operational carbon emissions of our homes.
Retrofit has been a crucial part of our campaigning platform, with work ongoing alongside communities across Northern England to promote community-based retrofit of empty homes.
Circular Economy for Housing
A circular economy for housing means integrating long-term approaches to planning into the fabric of our homes - all buildings must be made to be reused, and we must make a concerted effort to use them in such a way that their longevity is maximised. Investing in community-based retrofit of empty homes is an important dimension of the circular economy of housing. Retrofit makes homes sustainable by increasing their energy efficiency, leading to lower energy bills for inhabitants and lower operational carbon emissions.

what does it mean to be an
environmental partner?
How we qualify as an Environmental Partner
We were honoured to be accepted as an Environmental Partner by 1% for the Planet. The first step of being accepted onto the initiative, is being recommended by an existing member. We were then vetted in terms of:
Our legal compliance, geography of operations, and mission statement.
Having alignment of mission to one or more of 1% for the Planet’s Impact Area Targets. In our case, we aligned on their area known as Just Economies, which covers decarbonisation. Our work on empty homes aims to reduce carbon emissions both in terms of the embodied carbon and operational carbon related to creating and maintaining energy efficient homes.
Having two-thirds or more of our budget aligned with the 1% for the Planet Impact Areas.
Ensuring our organisation wasn’t involved in greenwashing or false promotions.
